Best's 2017 CS, CF, M blend

This blend, typically named 'Bordeaux' as it's the classic combo of red grapes from the heart of France's claret (using another classic description) region.

Best's version is also a classic.

Established in 1866, this winery in northwest Victoria near Gariwerd is one of Australia's oldest. Indeed its Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vineyards are claimed to be the world's oldest.

The Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot vineyards are also decades old.

To say Best's owners, the Thomson family, know precisely what to do with such renowned vineyards is to understate their expertise.

Every wine they make shows a deft hand.

This blend seamlessly melds savoury tannins with gratifying fruit forwardness.

Let it breathe before drinking. Decanting is preferable. It needs a good airing to allow those marvellous flavours time to coalesce into what is a very memorable experience.

What goes with it?

Bordeaux traditionally marries well with lamb.

Australian roast lamb, potatoes, pumpkin etc and this blend?

Game, set, match.

A simple steak and chips would pair well too.

A mild goat curry?

Try it with this.

Greek moussaka?

Opa!

Chicken cacciatore/chasseur?

Si and oui.

Mushroom risotto with porcini? With truffle?

That would be the best.

Yeah, we meant that.
