Sorrenberg 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon

Sauvignon Blanc has acquired a bad name mostly because of the shitloads of cat's piss on gooseberries dumped in Australia from New Zealand's Marlborough region.

A sad situation because when SB is treated properly, a fine wine it will be.

Sorrenberg from NE Victoria's Beechworth is a consistently reliable winery whose current release of this 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon blend is simply outstanding.

Fully fermented in French oak barrels, the SB component on lees for a few days, the Semillon immediately after picking, it's a wine that sings a siren's tune.

It's a classic white Bordeaux blend but with Antipodean fruit punch.

Luckily for us, no gooseberries and cats, no noxious green vegetable nonsense. Instead it's a full bodied endlessly giving wine of generous proportions. Whiffs of stone fruits, oaky depth, all seamlessly together with an extensive refreshing finish.

This wine would make fried calamari rings taste Michelin starred.

Any seafood would be immediately enhanced.

Skip saké and drink this with sashimi.

Fry a nice rainbow trout in brown butter with capers, lemon and parsley and dive in.

Go Germanic, (Sorrenberg is named after a Mosel town where the owners, Morey family, is from) and pan fry a nice piece of veal schnitzel with boiled new potatoes.

Fresh goat's cheese and tomato puff pastry tarte?

Go for it!
