Scion 2017 Muscat
Here's a tasty treat from the new Rutherglen. As in it's not the old fashioned Rutherglen like stolid tannic Durif or heavily fortified sticky sweet fortified Muscat or Topaque.
This sits sort of in between style-wise.
Scion is a newish small winery just outside Rutherglen town.
Winemaker owner Rowly Milhinch may come from 5th generation local stock but he does wine his way: fresh, lively, interesting and different.
His Muscat Nouveau is a prime example.
Serve lightly chilled, it's anything but simplistic Italian Moscato comparatively speaking.
No spritz. Smooth, fruit driven, as in full speed ahead. Abundant fresh muscat aroma and flavour. Peach? Mango? Lychee? It's the bomb.
Unfortified, this is pure Rutherglen muscat, the essence of itself.
We had it with a perfect crispy crusted cherry pie.
Lovely match!
Apricot tarte, blueberry and apple crumble or blackberry clafoutis. Crêpes Suzette?
You get the gist.
The photo is a 2017 bottle from our cellar.
New release is from 2022.
Whatever. They're all sensational.
